during CNY, i heard many predictions about how the luck of the different zodiacs are rather bad this year.. which I must say its quite true.

I am feeling lost yet again. Feeling helpless that I cannot offer my help to a friend who is so close to my heart. I get the feeling that A does not want my help in anyway, but still a large part of me want to help A. This feeling sucks big time and I cannot help but feel that way. I am afraid I will lose A in time to come. Please, let that be FALSE.

Day 1: today is much of a tired and knowing-people day. Having NOT really slept during the flight which experienceed turbulence on a regular basis - hence the seat belt sign is on-off-on-off-on-off, with the same announcement being made, disrupting the movies/audio systems. Then upon reaching Seoul, we went to the hostel and formal meeting starts soon after :)

We got our discussion topic, discussed a little then went on our campus tour :) Played Domino at night, before sneaking out (ok, walking out i mean) to the nearby EMART which is really a combination of everything - with the size of bigger than carrefour Singapore (and note that it is located in a shopping mall).

Had internet connection - yay.
And happy to hear that Han Quan has arrived safely in US. TAKE CARE FREN.

When medical skills is really put to the test

23 July 2010 - Friday. It was just like another friday morning, coming to my usual sitting location, preparing myself for the day - when it happened.

Received news that a boy had fell down and was bleeding badly. Help is on the way, but as a first aider, I must established the first point of contact. Luckily, WP was with me - he is a trained medic. We rushed to the location and started applying first aid to the boy. Suddenly everything I learnt in my course - ALL IN THEORY and MOCK PRACTICALS flashed back. In my mind was.. what should I do when I see this, see that? I tell myself to remain calm, but I can still feel my hands trembling a bit because now everything is REAL. i remembered the few vital things that I must do then, with the help of WP, we did whatever we can to (i) check for injuries/ broken bones (ii) keep the boy conscious (iii) stop his bleeding (iv) ensure he can breathe properly by unbuttoning the top button of his shirt etc. I know (r
ather indirectly) the boy that adds on to the emotional intensity. The paramedics arrived and the boy was escorted to the hospital. Knowing first aid is essential, though one may not use it for a long time, you will never know when you will need the skills.

Boy B was usually noisy and loud. BUT he was responsible today. A different side.

I looked back at my previous few posts in this blog and realised, firstly, I haven't been updating for months. I do put some of the blame on facebook status updates, photo uploads as all these contribute to telling my friends what I am up to these days, hence reducing the need for blogging. I thought for a bit and came to a conclusion that blogging serves to remind MYSELF of the things I have done, want to remember and experiences and feelings I am feeling at that point in time. Hence, I decided, to the best of my abilities, I would blog again - not on random events but dedicated to things, people, times that I want to keep with me and never forget. This blog entry is dedicated to a good friend of mine who is going off to US for his studies, perhaps never coming back ever again.

In my 24 years of my life, I encountered many events which transcends happiness to sadness. Many of my friends had gone overseas for studies and work for a period of time, say 1 year to 3 years. Each time a friend leaves for SEP, work-related travel or uni-studies, I will feel a sudden lost. I am not exaggerating this. I think it relates back to my personality as an emotional person, a boy (now a man) who values friendship a lot. I once had a conversation with Jasmine regarding the workings of friendships. I told her: once the friendship is established beyond a certain level, there is no need for the parties involved to constantly meet up. Instead, we can be separated for a very long period of time yet still remains as good pals, with the flame of friendship burning beautifully. This time, things are however a bit different. This good friend of mine is leaving for US, and perhaps, never coming back to Singapore. I got a sudden feeling that I had permanently lost a friend but yet his reassurance made me felt that this feeling I got is WRONG. I had not lost a friend, but instead we have to keep this flame burning. Here is where I should put what I learnt to good use - with globalisation and the advent of technology, the world is becoming borderless, and there is always the possibility of me flying over to the states to visit him, or him coming back to Singapore for a holiday again. This propels me to work hard, earn more money to fulfil this purpose. I am not very good with expressing my words and feelings, but I would like him to know that I am veyr grateful to have known you and sincerely thank you for all the good memories we had together. Take good care of yourself overseas and I will see you next year there. Bye friend. Bon Voyage.

2009 Festive Greetings was made fun by re-editing 'dai-di', a game commonly played by people during chalets, festive seasons or when they are bored and have nth to do.

1. Instead of the first person winning, the game is played in such a way that the second/third/fourth person who wins the game will be the champion instead - this challenges one to think how to approach the game.

2. Each of the players will have to draw from a pile of four cards - 1,2,3,4. If they chose 1, the particular player will only in if he is the FIRST person to dispose of all his cards (this is the same for the rest of the players).

I know it has been 3 months since I update my blog. Here is an update on my on-goings:

1. Field Studies 2009
Been back from Field Studies 09 at June 22. This trip has been indeed an interesting and eye-opening trip for me. I made several new friends and also gained a lot of knowledge from the experience. We have several outings of course! And we also had a presentation of our projects when term starts. :)

2. Teaching Attachment
I was attached to Bukit Merah Secondary School for my attachment. I must say that this school has brought many fond memories to me - from the principal, to the staff and of course the student. I am happy I had my 3 fellow teachers-to-be with me - Sze Ying, Lin Qiao and Justin. They are a very fun batch and though we teach different subjects, we got along very well and went out for a few outings after our attachments as well. I was very happy to have met my secondary 4C students. I came up with this phrase to summarise my experience: To inspire, Be inspired.

3. Student Attachment
Left Singapore with a happy yet heavy heart on 31st Aug to London. Thanks to my family and friends who sent me off that very day. I went travelling and have been to london, paris, berlin and prague - my final stop before heading back to paris for 2 days and back to london. College enrolment starts on 21st.

Me and my sis practically did everything people in AMAZING RACE did over there.

1. Drive a marked car (we drove a rented car - a convertable)
2. Getting lost and asking fellow motorist for directions (that implies getting out of the car and flagging down on-coming cars of which some stopped and help while others simply ignored us).
3. Driving for 6-7 hours straight (for no break)
4. Sitting all other public transport (free CAT bus, Transperth Bus, Perth Train)
5. Going to specific tourists hotspots e.g. Frenmentle Prison, Pinnacles etc.
6. Ended up with limited cash and limited time and have to rush to the airport (cos we were given the wrong direction) = 'begging' the cab driver to bring us there at a cheaper cost ($30 instead of $35).

It was a very unique trip, doing all sorts of wierd stuff that I normally dont do. And I met Weilun, my friend studying there.

My Life Journey – 23rd Birthday – Loving Everyone

Being 23 isn’t that scary after all. The fact that I am moving towards the term of ‘mid-20s’ is quite sad for me – I can still vividly remember my teenager years, where everything seems quite carefree and less worries. Being 23 is part of growing up and this whole fear of being old-er is dismissed from all the fun that I have with my family and friends. As Kwok Siong puts it, just wait 2 more years and we well ‘migrate’ from CAT X to CAT Y.

This year’s birthday celebrations starts early instead of the usual late. I enjoy the celebrations with my family and friends, but more so due to their presence and the fact that they are spending time with me. I cannot thank my family enough as they are always there to support me in times of exhilaration as well as depression. My friends too, play an important role. Without you guys around, my life will lack something that is critical to my development and I treasure the times and relationships with all of you.

WHile I was watching the HCJC 03's orientation video, I realised that I am featured inside. Haha. it was quite funny actually. I looked like a fool.

NUS Open House 2009

Last year, I attended the NUS Open House as I have to help out at a booth Wenjian is in-charge of. I remember seeing Matthew attending to the potential students, as well as Dr Lim Han She. This year, I am the student helper for FASS Booth, representing the Department of Geography. I always wanted to do such things, probably because of my character – that I like to speak and talk a lot, especially these things. So when Prof Chang sent out the email asking for our help, I agreed almost without thinking.

Today’s crowd started streaming in around 11. It was quite tiring, having to stand for so long from (9am to 6pm). But it was really fun and meaningful. Most of the questions surrounding the open house were on ‘career prospects’ and ‘ must I do an equal mix of physical and human geog’. There were some super-enthusiastic students, who are not yet going to NUS but still came along to find out more. I chatted with some students and I realised that the putting of the 90th percentile results is a good thing as students can get to know (at least a reference) of the average grade to enter FASS.

The whole time with Dr Neo was very funny and fun. I realised that Dr Harvey Neo was my Hwa Chong senior. And the funny thing is that both of us are taught by Mr White, who is still at HC now. Then Dr Neo mentioned that Prof Yeoh was taught by him too. Haha. And he is from 92A15 (Humanities Class!). Prof Skelton took over at 2pm. It was very nice talking to Prof Skelton!

After the whole day, my legs are really feeling tired BUT everything is worth it.

IPPT - Final Dash

YES! Finally after months of training, I finally passed my IPPT window this year. Phew. It was quite drama during the whole process. Let me tell u why...

1. Pull-Up Station - I did 4, then the 5th one was not counted even though my neck went over the bar. Luckily, the PTI said 'Plus 1'. So i did my 6th one. PASS.

2. Sit-Up - 40, as usual. YAY!

3. Standing Broad Jump - 216. Then I attempted the second time: 206cm. Bleahs.

4. Shuttle Run - 10.4/5s - 5 points. YES!

5. 2.4km Run - most drama. I was counting my rounds and seeing my timing on the screen.

The topic is a bit difficult to understand but as what Mel-lo puts it 'we came specially for her'. She is rather entertaining, putting rather complicated concepts in simple, easliy understandable ways.

She called me to answer a question today -

'I know some people in this class ... Jonathan ... what did you observe? ...'

I answered the questions to the best of my abilities (and I heard a few 'huh huh' in the audience)

Luckily she understood and explain what I meant to the class! And she said this:

'Jonathan is a really nice person... you should try to know him ...'

Random Courage

Xuemin showed me a Jap Singing Competition brochure on thursday during class yesterday. And I decided, randomly, to participate in the competition. I practised for less than 1 hour in total and brought with me the lyrics to the auditions. I knew it will be a flop in terms of performance but the feeling of standing in front of 4 judges is so similar to American Idol. When I was singing the 2nd part, I knew I had flopped, so i decided to just enjoy myself - I pretended I was having a concert. Thanks to Xuemin for her encouragement, Boon Kian for accompanying me and Han She for all the help rendered (it really helped calm my nerves). Singing is really different from acting. It is a totally different set of skill and I am to master it. :)

2008 has been a fruitful and challenging year for me.

I changed a new blog skin in Jan’08, perhaps symbolising a new beginning for me. Having had a wonderful first semester in NUS, made me look forward to an even more exciting semester(s) in 2008.

Jan also marked a random trip to Hong Kong for Joey Yung’s concert. I rushed off to the airport after Prof Chang’s tourism lecture only to find my plane delayed. It was a refreshing trip as it was over a weekend and the feeling of getting away during school term was shiok, seriously.

And the sex-scandal came out soon after.

CNY was fun, fun, fun. The whole idea of the 4 cousins – me, wendy, mavis and Terrence dressing up was indeed a novel and interesting one. The 4 of us were ALL so AA (Attract Attention) that everywhere we went, people were talking an extra look on us. The theme for 09 hasn’t been set yet, but stay tuned.

Valentine’s Day was spent with a dear friend of mine – michelle. It was a nice dinner (except for some unhappy incidences with the staff). It was rather funny as a relative of mine thought she was my girlfriend and was insisting me to introduce her to her. Both of us were like: NO. NO. We are only good friends.

Feb’29, a once in 4 year day, was spent with wenjian at the YEP’s Leader’s Networking Dinner. It was also the start of our involvement with YEP as their alumni mentors, inspiring new leaders and sharing with them our experiences and activities as new leaders.

Stayed till late in school to prep for GC Prelims in Mar. It was exciting and challenging doing all the administrative work before the event as I never thought that hosting such a big event can be so tiring and exhausting. BUT it was a success.
Huang Cheng Ye Yun 2008 – Nostalgic.

14th Mar – Drama Festival! It was so so memorable for me – being a main cast in one of the 6 plays and also the emcee for all the plays. Thanks to Audrey and Aeron, my fellow co-emcee for putting this into a huge success. Also to the casts and director of my play. I really really love drama-fest. Looking forward to it this coming year.

March’21 – My 22nd Birthday.

Pit-Stop Outing with Geographers was a fun-filled one. Playing games that ranges from idiotic to intellectual – it proved, with the exception of Matthew and Prof Chang that most of us belonged to the idiotic-range.

STB visit in April was quite fun. Tourism was a module that I love a lot - both the subject and the lecturer. On a lower note, I entered a ‘whiney’ depression syndrome near to exams - especially towards psychology.

Entering the examinations era - *bleah*. Last paper was tourism and like 1101e, the mentos came along as I was rushing my last few sentences for Prof Chang. I especially enjoyed my first question, where it was ‘design a new hotel based on new tourism principles’ (rephrased) and I drew and coloured a hotel. It was one of the most creative essay I did and one which I enjoy doing.

I like being a tour guide too. Hosting the NTNU students with geographers was a fun task. Being a tour guide enthusias, I love travelling too – May was spent with the geographers at Msia! It was a nice few days of rest, relax and rejuvenation. It also bonded us to the MAX, and I mean it because we saw each other more than 7 days a week, with only breaks of less than 12 hours.

Sounders tried to step out of our comfort zone too by engaging in more physical activities. Apparently, after that, we resumed our fattening acts by going to dinners. Klunches, nothing physical at all – hmmm maybe ice-skating.
Re-service in JUNE. Not a lot to say about that.

GC – right after serving my nation! Unforgettable experience indeed. Thanks to all who have made it possible. Special mention – Png Peishan, my co-emcee for GC Finals

FIC was also another memorable one.

Summer School was a wrongright choice made by me. Wrong in terms of grades (lets not talk about that) Right because of the friendships made and the whole experience was so different. Taking lessons with our Denmark and YALE UNI friends was so different. It felt like a local-SEP and though the workload was immense, it was worth the effort. When it came to the Thailand-Cambodia fieldtrip, everyone was so excited that no one really cares about the report BUT to learn more about the culture and enjoy ourselves to the maximum. Thanks to Ben and Shaun especially for being my bed-room buddies. And cheers to the clique – Me, Ben, Claudine, Lee Min, Jasmine, Stella, Brandon and Shaun.

On an interesting note, sounders changed our route by going pubbing in August. Trying to be all-rounders. BUT we definitely are. Haha.

Stepping down as the Hon Gen Sec from the 42nd is a sad event. I will sorely miss the 42nd and sincerely hope that this bond and friendship between all of us can last for a long long time. From the bottom of my heart, I truly love the 42nd MC. And life after stepping down was boring (common thoughts by most of my comm.) and suddenly school work seems very heavy. Official handover was in Sept, but 42nd still tries to help out by offering our ‘expertise’ whenever we can.

Kudos to my primary school friends! A reunion after 10 years! And I am looking forward to next year’s outing. Nadia maybe coming with her 2 children!

Congratulations to myself for attaining CLASS 3 too.

I became a poster-boy for the Geog Dept in Oct on a poster promoting Geography at King’s College London. Happy. Also because I topped the class in the Natural Hazards Midterms and received a ‘Journal of Cave and Karst Studies’ as my reward, and this spurred me to study harder for GE3231.

I became a ‘crasher’ in Nov. I crashed Prof Chang’s 1101e’s last lecture and also Changing Landscapes. Oh my, what am I doing when the exams are near.

Attended Xinwei’s 21st Birthday even though it was in the midst of my exams – BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY! It felt wierd re-wearing the old Hwa Chong uniform but it was certainly a fabulous party. Not forgetting the hazardous outings after the exams – congrats to all of us for doing well for hazards – we are indeed hazardous.

Sounders, once again decided to go physical – Ice-Skating. FUN but I came home with injuries. My toe-nail bled internally and my hand was sprained quite badly I think as now I am typing with a bandage. Then we went back to our usual self of engaging in fattening activites.

Christmas was one of the most fun! Time was spent with Ms Wong (crazy shopping), OG Clique, Sounders, JC Clas, Prof Chang and fellow Geographers! It was so fun-filled and so FUN! All of them made this special day so special, so memorable!  Nothing beats knowing you people.

And due to my boredom and Peishan’s procrastination of her own personal geographies of fear, we embarked on a special journey to save the world. Hopefully this comes with a surprise! We do have powers ok!

Sounders, once again decided to embark on a different route, only to find themselves without the correct feel for things. We should seriously have met up more after our exams and not accumulate to many outings in just 2 weeks. Haha. And we are going to have an adventure tomorrow 1st Jan 2009

In conclusion, 2008 has been a fulfilling year for me. I look forward to 2009!

Saving the World - A tale of 1 hero and 1 heroine

The whole concept of 'Saving the World' began with 2 rather good friends, a male and a female (gender geography) who did not realised about their common interest. The male, after the exam of his life, embarked on his own route to boredom (personal geography), doing non-constructive yet exciting things to spent his time. Meanwhile, the female, was in nightmare. She was cooped in her own 'geography of fear', trapping herself in this dream that will materialise soon. Their lives once interlocked in the past year but since 'retirement' - ageing phenomenon?, the led rather independent lives, with their only interaction only via the (im)famous electronic messenger.

One fine day, these 2 opposite polarities met - and a common goal is targeted. Due to the male's boredom and the female's fear and procrastination, they are endowed with special powers to save the world. Never once did the globe faced with such major and natural phenomenon. These 2 special heros, granted with powers of the interlinked world (K Ohmae Borderless World) and the the power of the 'wor(l)dy' began their journey. Their mission is to come up with a plan to save the world. Fret not cos their powers are complementary. After days of formulating the plans, they decided to meet up today for a coffee session where they will discuss their grand ideas to combat the enemy. Localised term for the coffee session is termed 'Lim Kopi'(Geography of Particularisation) and true enough due to their intense discussion, their meal proved un-fulfilling.

Great Powers come with Great Responsibility - with such immense power, can they defeat the enemy?

Will they succeed?

Sat and Sun was filled with awesome adventures - xmas gathering and parties! :)

Met up with fellow JC-Classmates at kai's place for xmas dinner and gift exchange. It wsa quite wonderful meeting them once more as load of past memories and current events filled in during the session. Alan will be leaving for the states for his exchange and th girls are spending their last semester in schools, with the exception of Siqi who is already working.

Im very happy over my results. It was a tiring semester. I did not expect myself to do so well, seriously. It was really very good. Disappointed over SE3214 as I expected myself to do better. I spent a lot of time studying this and is one of my favourite modules. GE2228 was the other exception as I did average for my CA which accounts to 60%. I was expecting a B/B+ for this module.

All the best for my friends who are getting results. Congrats to shaun, lee min, weiping and jasmine for scoring well too.

I was studying Nat Haz with Val outside MPSH when we saw Prof Terry. Haha. He was asking us whether we had lunch and hopefully we dont feel sleepy after lunch when doing his paper. Haha. Nope, I dont feel tired. I was RUSHING the paper like nobody's business! I got a huge shock when i saw the questions, I can feel others feeling the same thing as me. Lol. The2 hours passed like a typhoon. Rushing 5 mini-essays and 1 FULL essay, drawing as much relevant diagrams as possible.

I remembered Prof Miksic waving his envelop of exam papers at me and jas. Haha. He is such a funny and nice lecturer!

Finally exams are over and I can rest.

I was so anxious when checking my SEP results today. YES! I got accepted by NUS to go to KINGS COLLEGE LONDON, together with Jas. Hopefully, we can go together! Please!!!!! And Yuna got UCL. Congrats to her and her.

Recess week is coming to an end. And effectively I did not exactly did anything constructive (and academic) because I was busy with some (un) academic stuff, though practical!

Most of my time was spent doing projects (and discussions) and driving.

Wed: Went out with sounders for dinner and St James :)
Thurs: Hectic day, doing from driving to school, hearing SEP talk, discuss project!
Friday: Traffic Police Test! and Dinner with summer school peeps.

I met up with water buffalo and champion to go do fieldwork at Singapore River on Sat. Coincidentally (actually we organised it) it is also on the same day as the GE1101E fieldtrip :) Prof Chang was really nice and sweet to offer us their worksheets and also on a guided tour! However, due to the extent of our project (and we did not want to trouble him also) we decided to venture on our own. Haha but we met up at Pitstop Cafe anyway! Hahhah. Dr Pow is also very nice!

Then today we had another fieldtrip to National Museum, Fort Canning and Haw Par Villa. Though the summer school people have gone there before, I still learnt something new today! I think the former trip really gave a good background understanding and so when Prof Miksic was explaining the stuff, it became more clear :)

We have known each other for 16 years. I personally cannot believe it. The feeling is quite intense because we haven been meeting for quite sometime already (by that I mean years!) and it was a nice feeling to get together again, remembering the old times (how life was back then) and it was really fun.

Some interesting memories that flashed back to our minds.

1. The very very fierce Mr Ho that hits all of us with the 1m long wooden RULER and it breaks into 2 + the doing of sit-ups as punishments.

Henderson Waves Walk

Went walking with mummy and relatives to a walk organised by the RC. It was quite a nice walk, with the drizzle cooling the heat emitted from our bodies.

Shall go exercising soon. Terence, we train together. Since we need to take IPPT soon. :(

University Night - Presentation at NYC

Boon Kian and Me gave a short 25 min presentation of our CIP done in Cambodia last year. Initial fear that our presentation will be dry and boring (if we speak too formally) and overly informal (if we entertain the students - from different unverisities and organisations).

Overall, we did well (in front of 80 plus students!~)
Good job and Kudos to both of us!

In less than 1 hours time, I will be heading for school, preparing for the Elections at 6.30pm. It has been one year since I am elected into office. Being the Honorary General Secretary for the Geographical Society has been a tough yet enriching and rewarding journey for me.

I still remember stepping into Earth Lab on the election night with Wenjian (whom I asked him to come and support me and he ended up in the MC as well). I applied the position that I truely wanted and after being bombarded with questions by the floor, I was elected as the Hon Gen Sec. My dream has came true.

In this one fruitful year, the 42nd MC worked hard together, orgnising many many events such as MAF, Teachers' Day, GC, Open House, FIC and went for many many outings and fieldtrips together. It is the Geog Soc that I made many of my university friends whom I can 'click' with. It is not easy to find people whom I can talk to easily and I am glad that I found them in the MC.

I would like to take this opportunity to THANK every single MC member who has been through so much with me. Without your support, encouragement, talking nonsense and stuff, time will not have passed with joy and left happy memories behind. I am serious when I say that and from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU EVERYONE again.

If I have in any time during my office, scolded / quarreled with anyone (or anyone not pleased with me), I also take this opprtunity to apologise to you.

Ok, shall keep this short (if not i will drone on and on non-stop). Let the legacy of the 42nd MC go on. I will MISS the time I spent with all of you.

School and Relaxation

School's started and I felt that this semester I am quite screwed up. Initially, I thought I can cope with 3 level 3000 modules but I proved otherwise. Dropped 1 and took a level 2000 one.

Went to Prof Chang's house for Thank You Tea and it was very beautiful :)

Tomorrow I will officially hand over Hon Gen Sec to my successor.

Summer School - The Release of Results

After the nostalgia from Summer School, the dreadful morning came where I need to CHECK the results of my 2 modules. When I first entered the programme, my aim was drastically reduced to 2B-s (ya, prep for the worst!). Gradually, when i got back my CAs, essays, reports, my hopes sort of rose to 2Bs.

HY2250: Introduction to Southeast Asian History (A-)

Overall CAPP dropped though but I am happy cos I did above my expectations.

我也从一位好玩的十几岁男孩转变成一位二十几岁的大学生。
读着读着，很多很多回忆再次浮现在我脑海里。
我也再次仿佛回到了过去。

想起。。。你对我的了解，
想起。。。开心，吵架，伤心的情景，
想起。。。我放弃的决定。

回到现实，眼泪也不知不觉的流下。

也是开心的。
